Characteristics of computers that we use today are as follows:
- Speed: - Computers are much faster as compared to human beings. A modern computer can execute millions of instructions in one second. The operations of personal computers are measured in thousandths of a second or a millisecond. A computer can perform basic operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, division etc at a very high speed.
- Accuracy: - Computers are very accurate. If the data entered into the computer is correct and if the set of instructions are correct, then the result produced will be accurate. Computers can perform all calculations and comparisons accurately provided then hardware does not malfunction.
- High Storage Capacity:- A computer has a very large memory. It can store a large amount of information in a very small space. Computers can store billions of characters and perhaps thousands of images on disks that can be available for future use. The data stored can be retrieved instantly and correctly whenever desired.
- Reliability:- Computers are immune to tiredness and boredom or fatigue. Being a machine, a computer does not suffer from lack of concentration. . Even if a million of calculations are to be done by computer, it will did the last calculation with the equal exactness and speed as the first one. Thus are more reliable than human beings.
- Versatility :- Computers can perform repetitive jobs efficiently. They can solve labour problems or do hazardous jobs in a hostile environment. They even can work in the areas where the human brain can error, for instance, observing the motion of very fast moring articles. Also they can work with different typer of data and information like graphics, audio – visual characters etc.
